Etiology of thumb sucking habit and its effect on developing malocclusion

The persistence of thumb sucking might also be harmful as it associated with the development complications seen on paronychia and nail deformities in mouth level malocclusions. In this review, we have looked up studies literature to identify effect malocclusion. Thumb children usually occurs a primitive reflex that appears early childhood no apparent causative factors. Children develop habit because way they feel more comfortable secure. main cause behind is prolonged presence which creates pressure against developing jaw teeth. This may interfere process tooth eruption leading delayed or abrupt events malformations. severity malocclusion significantly chronicity period thumb-sucking habits. Other forms occlusions secondary include: anterior open bite, exaggerated overjet, posterior crossbite, retrognathic mandible, diastema, temporomandibular joint disorders retroclined low anterior. sucking, however, self-limiting phenomenon disappears grow older. However, when noticed, immediate management should approached avoid any potential complications.
